In a quick format, only the data on the hard drive is erased. A full format takes a longer time, but it check the hard disk for errors and notifies the user , so that he or she can take suitable corrective action.
It will also automatically try to correct the bad sectors, if it is unable to, it will mark them as bad, so that no data is written on to them in future.

Before formatting your PC it is important to backup your important information, because while formatting you will lose all the data.
To format the hard disk drive of your Desktop or Laptop you have the following steps:
Step 1. Insert your Windows XP installation disc into your CD drive.
Step 2. Reboot your machine. Ensure that the boot sequence is such that it will first attempt to boot from the CD/DVD drive and then the hard disk.
The computer will boot from the CD.
Step 3. Go through the steps in “Windows XP Setup” until you reach the installation option, where you should specify which drive you want to use.
If you wish to remove the partition also installed, you can remove them and then you can FORMAT you drive(s) by pressing “F”.
NTFS is the file formatting system used.
Step 4. If the drive is divided into multiple partitions like C, D and E, Windows XP can be installed on C after formatting. The other drives D and E can be formatted even later
